News from the SVGM

Indoor market hours: Fridays, 2-5 pm

Next week, Friday, May 4, the SVGM moves outside~
outdoor hours: 2-6pm
Hello everyone!~~~
The wait for the outdoor market season is almost over, and it feels like Spring is finally shining some sun and warmth down upon us. You can be sure there are still some cold nights ahead, but it looks like we're into the steady milder temperatures we've been waiting for. Thus perfectly timed, next week we move outdoors to our seasonal location between Reitz Blvd. and the parking area just outside Brook Park Pet Supply. This will be the thirteenth year for the Susquehanna Valley Growers' Market, and we're ready to make it another great one~~~

We have a couple of new vendors we will be introducing, as well as a solid contingent of returning, familiar vendors. The farmers and producers you buy from at the SVGM raise or produce everything they sell themselves; it is the qualifying difference about this market. Our vendors do not buy from anyone and resell, they don't bring others' products to sell. The pride and quality is evident in everything you'll procure with us, and if you take the time to do so, you'll also have the opportunity to forge a true relationship with the people who produce the foods you eat throughout the market season. It is a true farmers' farm market.

Next week's email will have the updated vendor list in it, and there may be a bit of fluidity as the first month of market progresses. Mark your calendars to be sure you stop by and celebrate our opening day with us~~~

Also, we will return to our business hours of 2-6pm for the outdoor market season, so you'll have an extra hour to get there after work!

A couple of vendor items this week:

Weaver's Greenhouses will be at market tomorrow with their hydroponically raised tomatoes. Their greenhouse tomatoes are excellent, and provide a delicious tomato fix until the field growns come into season later in the summer. That's a long wait for tomatoes, so take advantage of these great-tasting early ones.

Bill Callahan of Cow-a-Hen Farm, as we mentioned last week, is on an extended medical leave of absence until the beginning of June. He is doing very well, and we all wish him well, and continue to send our blessings.

As always, thank you, so very very much for all of your continuing support, and for making this indoor market season another successful one. We hope to see you tomorrow~~

This week at market:
Stone Meadow Farm:
Artisan cheeses; grass-fed beef: lean ground beef, steaks, ribs, and specialty cuts & products; veal
Cow-a-Hen Farm: on medical leave until June
Beef, Pork, and Poultry
Beaver Run Farms:
Pork, specialty cuts and products
Punako Lane Artisan Hearth:
Artisan hearth-baked breads and biscotti, specialty items, eggs
Luke Weaver Greenhouses:
Tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes

News from the SVGM

Indoor market hours: Fridays, 2-5 pm
Hello everyone!~~~

Okay~~~so maybe next week I can unbridle my eternal hope and optimism that this cold spring weather has taken a warmer turn....... but April marches on, and two weeks from today the SVGM will move to its outside location alongside the parking lot that extends from Brook Park Pet Supply. We are ready, and we hope you are, too!

We are ever grateful to Sharon, the owner of Brook Park Pet Supply, for providing the ideal indoor space for our winter market these past three years. The move inside has been a good one for the SVGM, and has allowed us to have that year-round contact with all of you, whether you shop with us at this indoor location, or simply continue to read our newsletters each week to keep up with the way of the seasons of locally produced foods.

We do have a couple of vendor items to mention this week.

There is a possibility that Weaver's Greenhouses will be at market with us tomorrow with their hydroponically raised tomatoes; always a treat in the drudgery of non-tomato season!  They are  trying to work out some scheduling issues, so it might be a great excuse to stop by the market tomorrow.

Also, Bill Callahan, of Cow-a-Hen Farm, will be on an extended medical leave of absence until the beginning of June. We wish him well, and send our blessings.

April is the last seasonal month of the indoor market, and the May 4 opening of the 2018 Susquehanna Valley Growers' Market outdoor season is right around the corner. I'll be updating you soon about our vendors for the upcoming season, so keep an eye on this newsletter~~~

News from the SVGM

Indoor market hours: Fridays, 2-5 pm
Hello everyone!~~~

I'm sure my optimism is tied to the forecast for the upcoming week, but this morning's chilly walk with my dogs had a milder quality to it: the chill wasn't bracing and felt more refreshing, a nice pre-coffee wakeup chill. My lethargic budded daffodils and forsythias will certainly burst forth this weekend, and next week's fifties and above-freezing temperatures should visibly give us a taste of the spring joy we are all anxiously awaiting. Even the bare trunks of the trees look more beautiful against a background of spring green against the lawns and the cover-cropped fields.....

April is the last seasonal month of the indoor market, and we are four markets away, including tomorrow's, from the May 4 opening of the 2018 Susquehanna Valley Growers' Market outdoor season. I'll be updating you soon about our vendors for the upcoming season, so keep an eye on this newsletter~~~

But for now, grilling is about to get a whole lot warmer this weekend, so stop by tomorrow for some delectable things to fire up in celebration of the coming green!

As always, thank you, so very very much for all of your continuing support, and for making this indoor market season another successful one. We hope to see you tomorrow~~

News from the SVGM

Indoor market hours: Fridays, 2-5 pm
Hello everyone!~~~

Patience~~~I've been thinking a lot about patience this past week. I used to think "If I can just get through March....," but how easily I'd forgotten how volatile April can also be, and excruciatingly so, precisely because the calendar says we're in the throes of early Spring. Out here in the country (the country with the busy state road going right past it...), I have a single daffodil in bloom, and my wild forsythias have a distinct haze of yellow about them. The rabbits have stopped noshing on my tulip leaves (did you know I have the tastiest leaves in the area?) in favor of other tender shoots popping up daily, but my garden is basically still in the barely breaking dormancy stage. I barely have weeds.

Here at the indoor market, this is also the time of year when get customers pop in looking for greens. Hungrily, impatiently, looking for something local and green. I totally get it. Our farmers totally get it. But we won't have any greens for a little while yet, though you can be sure our outdoor market farmers are doing their best to prepare for the upcoming produce season. We and our tastebuds must be patient. Even the livestock must be patient, and the farmers who raise them, as they anxiously wait for the days when the pastures provide the nutrition their animals need.

Be patient everybody; we're almost there~~~ and there is nothing quite like that brilliant, green April day when you realize the trees have leafed out and begun to flower, and the tulips are colorfully in bloom, and the birds are busy building their nests, and everything around us smells new-growth fresh~~~

April is the last month for the indoor market, too. We're but a month away from the 2018 outdoor SVGM season, and we're patiently waiting for it to start! Friday, May 4, is the outdoor market start date this year. We're getting all the snow out of the way first...........

As always, thank you for making this indoor market season another successful one; we appreciate all of your support, and hope to see you tomorrow~~
