News from the SVGM

Hi everyone! I hope you've all had a good week. Spring is showing her early temperamental colors, as we roller coaster through the changing temperatures and hold on to everything in the gusts of her forceful winds. I've been throwing on my jacket and warm boots and taking my first cup of coffee outside in the early mornings, if only for a few sips, to breathe the spring air and listen to the life that is busily getting on with things. It's always a remarkably hopeful time of year, isn't it?
This week, Quaff Meadows will be at market, with spinach, eggs, honey and sweet potatoes. Spinach is a great and greatly nutritious early spring green, and it's encouraging to have these cool-weather leafy vegetables starting to make their appearance at market. Anita Shirk of Quaff isn't sure how many of the remaining indoor Fridays they'll make, but when I do hear from them, I'll be sure to let you know in these emails. They're busy getting ready for our outdoor season....
We're a little over a month away from our 2016 outdoor season, but we still have some wonderful local vendors making sure you have the best foods available during this transitional time. Whether you're grilling or roasting or sautéing, make the SVGM indoor market your first food-buying stop, and give yourself some extra time to learn from these producers exactly what they are doing this time of year: you might be surprised at just how much work is being done already to prepare for your local food supply in the upcoming months!
      See you tomorrow~~~

News from the SVGM

Hi everybody!  I have to admit it's awfully wonderful to see so much greening around me and so many daffodils in bloom~~~usually March feels so much longer because it's usually so much colder: it's most often that last winter month that makes us feel as though spring will never come, but this year we're getting a beautiful reprieve with a bona fide early spring.  I actually saw a landscaper mowing some grass today!  Quite a few fields have been turned over already with this early thaw, and the farmers are getting a jump on preparing them for planting. Will we have early crops at market this May? Perhaps~~~ you'll have to get there to find out~~~and I'll do my best to keep you informed.......

One of our most ardent supporters,--- indeed, she is one of our longest-standing supporters---- is Caroll Blank, and I wanted to share the letter to the editor that she wrote to the Daily Item last week with you. Caroll extols the market culture in this wonderful letter, and mentions not only the SVGM's indoor and outdoor markets, but also the surrounding community markets that are so deserving of community support.  Thank you, Caroll, for your unending support, and for the effort through this letter to make sure the readers of this local newspaper know exactly where and when the SVGM takes place. We sincerely appreciate the time and concern that you've shown.  Here is the link to her letter:
Look forward, as always, to seeing you at tomorrow's market~~~happy Spring!

News from the SVGM

With yesterday's temperatures and the coming week's forecast, it sure feels as though we're getting an "early" Spring this year. I think everyone is trying hard not to assume the storms of winter are behind us, but for now, I'm going to appreciate my spring fever while it lasts. At the very least, our farmers can get a serious jump on some of their outdoor work, whether in basic maintenance or in the fields. We all love to celebrate these unusual warm weather systems when they arrive, but if we do get caught with a later spring frost, it can cause some problems with tender plants and fruit blossoms that are further along than normal in their growth. All we can do is hope for the best, with some healthy respect for the earth and some tempering of our over-enthusiasm until we're sure we're over that hump! Until then, though, get outside and enjoy the warm mildness as much as you can: it's balm for the soul!

The SVGM 2016 outdoor market season will begin on Friday, May 6, in the parking lot right outside of Brook Park Pet Supply, where the indoor market currently takes place. Organizing for the season will happen soon, and I'll keep you posted on any news of interest. You can be sure that our farmers and producers are getting ready as I write this, because May 6 will soon feel as though it's right around the corner.  Soon we'll be consuming all things fresh and green again!

If you have any questions or even helpful thoughts or suggestions for the SVGM, please feel free to email us at svgmarket@gmail.com. Or even better, stop by the indoor market and talk to our vendors there in person. We always welcome any input that you may have~~~~

See you tomorrow!

News from the SVGM

Seventeen more days until Spring!  (Although in March, it's not over till it's over..... ) There's still a chill in the air, but signs of the coming greening are showing everywhere, from the increasing morning chatter of the birds, to the daffodils and alliums inching their way out of the ground. It won't be long now until the first lettuce and pea seeds go into the soil. Be patient~~~ Just a while longer! In another month or so, I'll begin to have updates on the 2016 SVGM outdoor season; stay tuned~~~~
The indoor market will take place tomorrow, 2-6pm. Stop by to talk with the winter vendors: they may have updates I don't yet have :)
