News from the SVGM

It's an incredibly stunning evening tonight. I walked outside for something, and I literally stopped to breathe in the clarity of the cold air, and to take in the shimmering beauty of the icily-glazed landscape as the light of the moon grew brighter with the setting sun. Although I'm itching for spring, there's a peace in the winter's dusky minutes that I love, and I'm grateful for my ability to still find ways to appreciate this cold season. If you read this tonight, take a moment to step outside and soak in the rays of a brilliant waxing moon~~ you won't be disappointed!
I can feel my appetite starting to shift a bit in this second half of winter, and a good soup seems to be the one thing that totally satisfies me in every way. I would place into that category stews and chiles, too, and the SVGM vendors have some great meats and sausages to roll into those one-pot meals. And Meesh Tarsa still has potatoes for roasting and souping and stewing, and layering into delicious gratins with cheeses and garlic and cream....... (think Stone Meadow cheese, too)~~~soak it all up with some of Giselle's bread.
Think we'll be seeing you at market tomorrow!~~~

News from the SVGM

This is the time of year I begin to seriously anticipate Spring. As we head into what could be the coldest couple of days we'll see this winter, I've a pile of mailing envelopes of seeds that I've ordered sitting on my coffee table, waiting to be organized, with some waiting to be sown within the next week. Our produce farmers are, most likely, doing much of the same: beginning to plan for their upcoming growing season~~~ordering seeds and reviewing seed supplies, repairing greenhouses, hoop houses and equipment, fertilizing soils when weather permits. Thinking about new varieties they can offer you this year, and getting those last "slower," somewhat restful days in, to refuel for the long days of farming ahead. I truly believe that we should all plant a few seeds for something each year. It's a remarkable process, watching a seed that we've placed into soil unfold into a plant; it's a wonderful way to understand where these nourishing plants come from, and an eye-opener, as we begin to understand the care and work that goes into a farmer's field of vegetables. I hope for all of you who support the SVGM, that you've come to understand and feel the movement of Central Pa's growing season, and have a heightened appreciation for what all of our local food producers go through to bring you their foods throughout the year. Just as it is their way of life to farm, I hope that the SVGM has become a part of your way of life, as you feed yourselves and your loved ones. Thank you always, for your continuing support throughout the year!
This week, Beaver Run, Stone Meadow, and Cow-a-Hen Farms should all be back for tomorrow's market. It's Valentine's Day on Sunday, so why not shop for some wonderful local foods to cook a special meal, instead of going out to a very crowded restaurant? Giselle promises to have "Valentine's Goodness" tomorrow, and Meesh Tarsa will be there, too.
So, Happy Valentine's Day, everyone~~~  make it an excuse to have a celebratory meal based on foods from the SVGM!
See you tomorrow~~~

News from the SVGM

With February 2, we crossed over the midpoint hump of what is officially Winter. Imbolc, Groundhog Day, St. Brigid's Day~ however you choose to celebrate it, we are into the second six weeks of winter, and then it's Spring! I actually heard conflicting stories about that darned groundhog and his shadow. Time will tell. This week's thaw and yesterday's rain made things a bit soggy out there: I have a car that is stuck for the time being, until the ground drains and the nighttime temps go back down. Gotta stop driving over that field.... I was naively deceived, the ground hasn't frozen that much at all, and boy was it spongy. So, good luck with the mud, but enjoy the nice but odd "winter" weather~~~wish I had a second pair of mud boots right now! I'm sure it will get cold again before it's all over.
Giselle's Breads and Tarsa Family Farm will both be at market this week. Cow-a-Hen, Stone Meadow, and Beaver Run Farms will all be back next week.
See you tomorrow~~~
